Develop your skills from the comfort of your own home with our ever-growing list of videos and webinar recordings.

BGTW Talks Travel is the British Guild of Travel Writers’ own series of webinars. They include content on everything from essential skills such as pitching, publishing and SEO, to overarching trends in the industry such as decolonising travel writing. Following the pandemic, we will focus more on in-person events with occasional webinars rather than regular ones. However, these videos will remain online as an excellent resource for all members.

BGTW Talks Travel: Unravelling Greenwashing in Travel Media

How do we unpick questionable environmental claims and avoid adding to greenwash in our own writing and content creation? In this webinar – chaired by BGTW Sustainability Lead, Diana Jarvis – Karen Edwards, Holly Tuppen, and Georgina Wilson-Powell discuss topics including how to spot greenwash in press releases/marketing materials, understanding when environmental claims might not be as they seem and how can avoid greenwashing in our articles, podcasts, or blogs.

BGTW Talks Travel: Get Savvy with Coaching

Fed up with no response to your pitches and unsuccessful applications for press trips?  Is it time to re-think your approach and find new motivation? Maybe it is time to explore the benefits of coaching. We are familiar with the concept of coaches in the world of sport but not so much when it comes to travel writing. Susan Grossman, a travel writer, editor and BBC broadcaster also an accredited coach. This webinar will explore the benefits of coaching through an introduction to the concept of coaching followed by a question and answer session.

BGTW Talks Travel: Working as a travel photographer today

What are the opportunities and challenges for travel photographers today? Join professional travel photographers Kav Dadfar, Simon Urwin, Nori Jemil, Karolina Wiercigroch and Diana Jarvis as they discuss the potential opportunities for photographers and how to go about getting work.

BGTW Talks Travel: How to pitch better and smarter

Are your pitches not quite ‘landing’? What makes a great pitch for a travel story? Join Lydia Bell, features editor at Condé Nast Traveller UK, Emma Gibbs, editor-in-chief at JRNY magazine, Meera Dattani, freelance writer and senior editor at Adventure.com, and travel journalists Steph Dyson and Lottie Gross in this panel discussion and Q&A with insights and advice from both sides of the fence.

BGTW Talks Travel: Intro to podcasting with Portia Jones of Travel Goals Podcast

How do you start a podcast? What about topic, audience and tone? What equipment and software do you need? How can podcasting be a creative outlet? Join Portia Jones, host of the Travel Goals Podcast in this practical intro session via Zoom.

BGTW Talks Travel: How can a podcast help your destination, travel company or brand?

Podcasts allow a destination, company or brand to share their story, taking listeners on an audio journey through local voices and captivating soundscapes. Podcasters Jon Holmes, Portia Jones, Aaron Millar, Susan Schwartz and Antonia Windsor will discuss the benefits of podcasting in this Zoom event, and what organisations should consider before producing or commissioning one.

Working with branded content

What exactly is branded content? Is it the same as sponsored content? What about advertorials and content marketing? And more importantly, how do you get into it?

Panel: Sarah Jewell, commercial features editor, Guardian Labs at Guardian News and Media; Ross Clarke, writer, lecturer and content marketing consultant; Dan Linstead, head of branded content, Immediate Media; Rosie Fitzgerald, special features editor, Wanderlust; Meera Dattani, events director, BGTW.

How travel media can work better with travel PRs and tourist boards

Working with travel PRs, PR agencies and tourist boards is part-and-parcel of travel writing, whether you’ve got a commission and now need hosting/assistance, or you’re attending a press/fam trip, or you just need extra information for a round-up or one-off help.

Panel: Mary-Clare Gribbon, co-founder, GribbonBerry; Carol Hay, founder, McKenzie Gayle Limited representing the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO); Kate McWilliams, managing director at LOTUS; James Treacy, PR & communications manager at Abercrombie & Kent; Meera Dattani, events director, BGTW.

How to freelance more effectively

What’s the secret to freelancing? From tracking pitches and managing your time, to self-motivation and organising yourself, to staying on top of emails and networking more effectively (after all, who doesn’t want repeat work and editors coming to you?), what can we all do differently or better when it comes to managing our freelance careers?

Karen Edwards, Antonia Windsor and Shafik Meghji join Meera Dattani.

Perfect your pitching technique

Do your pitches pack a punch? Are you pitching effectively? Why are your pitches not getting replies? Do you want to refresh or improve your pitching technique?

Join travel editors Cathy Adams, Sophie Lam, Lucy Thackray and Laura Jackson as they discuss the art of a good pitch with chair Meera Dattani.

Travel narratives and uncomfortable conversations

How do you tackle uneasy truths about a destination or sight within a travel narrative? With the International African American Museum due to open in 2022 in Charleston, a city where 40% of enslaved Africans arrived during the transatlantic slave trade, four experts from Charleston join us for an engaging discussion about how a city with an uncomfortable history can better tell and share its story.

Panellists: Dr Tamara T Butler, Vereene Parnell, Kourtney Jones, Spencer Pryor / Moderator: Meera Dattani

Views and flavours from Croatia

Join the BGTW and the Croatian National Tourist Board for an hour of travel chat plus food and drink tastings supplied by Taste of Croatia.

Mastering Instagram: Stories, Reels and IGTV

Do you want to up your Instagram game? Learn more about Stories, how to create them and make them more effective. What’s the deal with Reels and IGTV – when would you use one instead of another? How do you make your feed work better for you?

This one-hour workshop was led by Victoria Hutton, a videographer and editor and the former Head of Video at HELLO! Magazine and Mumsnet.

Getting your book published

Have you got a book idea ‘in you’? Maybe you’ve been thinking about it but don’t know how or where to start. Or you’ve started writing a proposal or even have draft chapters.

Maybe you’re sitting on a full manuscript or you’re considering a second (or third, or fourth!) book but need a refresh and want to know the current state of publishing.

SEO and travel journalism: How Google can help you land commissions

SEO (search engine optimisation) is becoming increasingly relevant to the day-to-day realities of travel journalism.

Steph Dyson, whose own travel website Worldly Adventurer received close to a million page views last year, shows us how SEO plays a part in everything from the commissioning process to improving the visibility of your own professional website or blog. She provides examples of tools you can use for everything from keyword research to trend analysis and on-site optimisation.

Decolonising travel writing – part 2

Now we’re taking the discussion to the next level by exploring how we can improve our content. Which words and phrases are problematic, why, and what can we use instead to create better travel content and articles?

How does travel photography exacerbate outdated tropes? What type of content and angles are appropriate, and how do we determine that? How else can travel content better respect and represent the places we visit? And is creating and featuring decolonised travel enough, or are there other ways that we can and should be decolonising travel culture?

Pitching and filing like a pro

From what makes a good pitch to why your idea doesn’t get a reply, and the rules of ‘chasing’/following up to bringing up the ‘ouch’ question of rates, this debate with top editors will be a refreshing take on pitching tips, that goes way beyond the usual (albeit very important) tips of ‘Read the mag first’ and ‘Check we haven’t covered it recently’.

We talk about overwhelmed inboxes, how to get your pitch noticed, the tone of emails, taking ‘pitching rules’ with a pinch of salt, and, gasp, even what editors/publication can do better when it comes to working with writers. Essentially, all those questions that freelancers discuss among themselves, but don’t, can’t or are too worried to ask editors.

Great British stays

There are few types of getaways more British than staying in a pub – boutique pubs with rooms, traditional inns, and affordable accommodation, all across the UK.

What does a stay in a pub look like now for couples, families, ramblers, dog owners, beer lovers and others? How does the personal touch in a smaller property combine with Covid-secure practices? What kind of experiences are available for your 2020 staycation?

Decolonising travel writing

What does ‘decolonise travel writing’ mean in practice? The genre of travel writing really took off during European expansion including the British Empire, with stories usually told from a white, male, Western gaze.

In this debate, we’ll discuss the outdated tropes, stereotypes, language and images that often permeate modern travel writing and photography, why we should be addressing this as an industry, and how travel media can play its part.

Telling a compelling travel story in digital media

From blogs to social media, to podcasts and video, digital is where many of us now share our stories. But with competition for our attention, and content becoming ever more ‘optimised’, it can be a challenge to creative storytelling.

This session will highlight examples of successful stories and reveal how you can blend optimisation techniques with captivating storytelling to ensure you not only gain an audience but keep your them enthralled.
