In this issue:

Hi everyone,

How are you all?

I’ve been unusually sociable and not-so-unusually faffy this week, so work has taken a bit of a hit: cue a weekend of clacking away at my laptop.

I did, however – on a non-travel writing request – conduct an interview with Jason Smith, a midlifer who transformed his health and physique at the age of 50. He was speaking in response to a fairly (and typically!) snarky Telegraph article, criticising Sacha Baron Cohen for his newly ripped, post-divorce physique. Jason’s story was very inspiring: you can follow him at @fitinmidlife if you’re interested!

Fun fact: when Sacha Baron Cohen’s ex-wife, Isla Fisher, was on Home & Away, her on-screen boyfriend was my real life boyfriend (he’s now a total weirdo, btw).

I hope your week has been more productive than mine, and that the weekend ahead is full of sunshine and good times.

Take care,
Sarah

New Member: Sophie Morgan

Please give a very warm welcome to new member Sophie Morgan! I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing her earlier this week, and she is so lovely, energetic, enthusiastic and talented that I even managed to overcome my envy about her attendance at Oasis’ Wembley appearance. Welcome, Sophie – we’re excited to have you with us.

Congratulations to Shafik Meghji!

A huge ‘well done’ to our brilliant member Shafik, whose book, Small Earthquakes – A Journey Through Lost British History in South America was published this week – an incredible achievement and one that’s already had some fantastic reviews!

If you’d like to learn more about the book, have a listen to this interview with Shafik, hosted by Shebs Alom.

And for those of you in or around London, don’t forget that Shafik will be launching Small Earthquakes at Stanfords Bookshop from 7 to 8:30pm on Tuesday 12th August, where I’m fully intending to get my copy signed, fan-girl style.

Please RSVP to jess@hurstpub.co.uk

Sri Lanka Coverage

Thank you to everyone on the Sri Lanka trip who have sent Charlotte their coverage, or have let her know when their features etc will be published. If you’re not sure whether you’ve sent it already, Charlotte suggests that you send it again, as it’s better twice than not at all! Our hosts will be submitting a report to their Board on the 8th August, so please ensure that you’ve sent everything to Charlotte by the 7th at the latest.

We will be using the coverage generated to help secure future trips for our membership, so it’s in everyone’s best interests to send your work in.

Reminder: Fundraising for Cora Harrison

Member Cora Harrison and her wife, Helen, are going through an unspeakably tough time, with their 3-year-old son, Oliver, having recently been diagnosed and hospitalised with high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Cora and Helen’s friends have set up a fundraiser to support the family, and it would be much appreciated if Guild members could donate as generously as they are able.

In addition, the team at FINN Partners is holding a charity quiz and raffle at the Mercure Ibis Earl’s Court on the 6th August from 6pm. Some incredible prizes have been donated by their clients and other companies.

To book tickets, please email charityevent@finnpartners.com or, if you can’t attend, click here to buy raffle tickets.
